If you are a space lover and dream to travel to space, then let us inform you that you have a fair chance of doing so. This concept of “Space Burial” became a commercial service around the 1960s. It is the launching of cremated remains into space. To not contribute to space debris, the samples of remains are not scattered in space. Launching small samples allows for a smooth launch and also helps reduce the cost.

The first experience of space burial took place in 1992 when the NASA Space Shuttle carried a sample of Gene Roddenberry’s (creator of Star Trek T.V Series) cremated remains into space and returned them to Earth. To keep this legacy going, his wife Majel Barrett (who played Christine Chapel in the original Star Trek series) made arrangements before her demise to have her ashes launched into space together with her husband’s. The launch is scheduled for 2020. 

Moving on to the process of this miraculous service, the companies offer you different types of experiences as per your needs and budget. You can have the ashes sent to the orbit for a few minutes and then returned to you for keepsake. You can also choose that the remains orbit the earth for a few years and then finally end this celestial journey as a shooting star. 

More fulfilling and expensive experiences like the lunar memorial, allow you to deliver a symbolic portion of remains to the surface of the Moon. On the other hand, the Voyager service will send the remains on a grand tour – beyond the solar system and into the vast deep of space itself. 

On launch day, the friends and family are invited onboard to celebrate together in a joint memorial service. Attendees share their favorite memories and commemorate the life of the lost one. The companies also provide a live webcast of the whole event. A professional video along with a certificate attesting the completion are provided to the concerned people. 

There is indeed something about the outer space that makes it seem like the perfect place to lay someone to rest. Instead of looking down upon the Earth in reminiscence, we can raise our eyes to the eternal wonders within the night sky, knowing that our loved ones are always with us.
