There was a rainforest of Caraway trees before the crematorium was built, and the region was known as Keoratala. In 1862, this crematorium was built alongside the Adi Ganga. Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy, the former Chief Minister of West Bengal, modernised the Keoratala crematorium. A park with a number of tombs and memorials is located nearby. Some of the most notable funerals that this cremation ground has conducted are of Indian freedom fighter Chittaranjan Das, Indian filmmaker Satyajit Ray, and Charu Majumdar (founder of the Communist Party of India).  The site is also connected to one of the most popular places for ashes immersions that is Khirod Mitra Ghat. The Ghat is popular among other ghats for ashes immersion in Kolkata including Babu Ghat, Nimtala Ghat, Bag Bazar Ghat (all on the Ganges; Nimtala and Bag Bazar both have crematoriums), and Siriti Ghat (also crematorium) (both on Adi Ganga).
