Memories are the only way to keep our loved ones alive among us. Usually, we cherish the belongings of the person who left us and set out on a new beginning. But specifically dedicating a memorial to the departed soul, is a unique way to remember his or her contribution to our lives. The memorial of our loving person provides us a physical touch to some extent and we build a connection with them through it by visiting the memorial along with our family and friends.

Memorials can be of distinct types like,

  1. A memorial wall plaque
  2. An engraved memorial bench
  3. A gravestone or grave marker, a headstone.

People are choosing headstone memorials in a large number these days. The reason for its liking is the vivid features it includes. Here is a glimpse of all the features that enhance the beauty of the memorial and make the memory of our loved ones vibrant.
  1. The headstone memorial marks the place where the person was buried.
  2. The name of a loving person is engraved on it. Along with the name, the date of birth and death is also mentioned on the headstone memorial which depicts the journey of life.
  3. A headstone memorial also keeps a beautiful quote. It can be related to the life of the departed soul or it can be a saying which gives a life lesson.

The Best Headstone Materials

There is a wide range of materials that are used in the formation of a headstone memorial. It completely depends on the choice of close kin and friends of the departed soul. The most preferred materials in the formation of headstone memorials are-
  1. Granite - When it comes to the subject of memory, the first thing which strikes our mind is, durability. Granite is a very famous material that is used in headstone formation because of its tough and durable quality. The second thing which attracts people is, that it comes in distinct colours. People can choose the colour according to the liking of a deceased person. Its finishing also allures people to it but the churchyards allow only non-polished granite in headstone memorials.
  2. Marble - Marble is widely known for its milk-white colour and natural beauty. Although many churchyards do not permit to use of it as a headstone memorial, people can use the marble stone in cemeteries.
  3. Limestone - Limestone has several varieties. Though the durability of limestone does not match the standard of marble and granite, many cemeteries and churchyards allow this material in headstone memorial formation.
  4. Sandstone - Sandstone could be a better option for headstone memorial formation because nearly all church yards and centuries do not put any objection to its use. Quartzose sandstone is widely preferred by people for this purpose.
  5. Slate - For smaller places, slate is the best option. It is quite easy to carve information and quotes on the slate. Besides this convenience, it can be used in both churchyards and cemeteries.

Things to keep in mind while mentioning the information and quote on the headstone memorials

This is the main and most important part of the headstone memorial because this information links the people to the departed soul. One must keep the following points regarding the carved information and quotes.
  1. The information should be very short and precise. Long paragraphs and the bulk of information can disconnect people in the mid. So we should choose the to-the-point facts which are related to that person.
  2. One must opt for the words very decisively because they reflect the personality of the departed soul. As an example, the wording of an elder person's headstone memorial will be far different from that of a young one's.
  3. Respect is an unavoidable element of the carved information. One must pick the words which show great reverence to the deceased person. You must think twice before finalizing it as many people will read it and speculate the level of your respect towards the departed soul through these wordings.
  4. These words will be mentioned there forever so they must not indicate a specific time. A short message can guide many persons in their lifelong period. Hence it should be related to a certain age or period.

What should be the ending and beginning of a headstone memorial?

As it is mentioned above that the words should be fewer but the emotions of those words should be deep,  long-lasting, and impactful. Here are some examples of such short openings and endings.
  1. Once met, never forgotten.
  2. Into the sunshine now.
  3. May the memory be eternal.
  4. Your love will light our way.
  5. In God's lap and care.
  6. Sleep till eternity.
  7. Our precious memories.
  8. Until we meet again.
  9. Forever in our hearts and memories.
  10. A life lived to the fullest.
  11. A generous heart was full of faith.

The time duration between the burial and headstone memorial placing

It is well known that every churchyard and cemetery has its own set of rules related to the placing of a headstone memorial after burial. But a usual period that is decided for the placing of a headstone memorial after the burial process is six months. It is considered that in six months the soil after burial settles down and makes itself perfect for the placing of a memorial. The same period is not applicable for the cremation process. One must discuss with the funeral director for the best advice.

Some examples of headstone memorials

  1. In loving memory of a dear husband, great dad and caring grandad (name). (Birth date) to ( death date). There will be neither darkness nor dazzling but an equal light, neither noise nor silence but equal music.
  2. (Name), ( birth year) to ( death year) Even as the sun goes down, To end the light of day, It's rising on a new horizon, Somewhere far away. It was a grace to be your wife. Rest in peace and power.
People can choose their own words as they convey the true feelings and emotions of the person who is not physically accompanying but the soul of the deceased truly senses that feeling.
